Dummy Text Generator

Lorem ipsum plus five themed libraries (cupcake, hipster, bacon, corporate, pirate). Pick paragraph count and length, copy in one click.

How to use the dummy text generator

  • Pick a count. Drag the paragraph slider from 1 to 20. The output replaces itself as you change controls.
  • Pick a length. Short (~30 words) for cards and tight slots, medium (~70) for body copy, long (~150) for full blocks and scroll testing.
  • Pick a library. Lorem ipsum for the classic, or one of five themed alternatives that match the mood of your mockup.
  • Optional classic opening. With Lorem selected, tick the toggle to start with "Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet". Disabled for the themed libraries since the Latin opening only fits lorem.

Hit Generate to roll a fresh batch, or change any control to regenerate. Use the per-paragraph Copy button for a single block or Copy all for the full stack. The tool runs in your browser, no sign-up.

When you need placeholder text

Dummy text fills a layout when the real copy is not ready. Below are the most common jobs and the right setup for each.

Design mockups in Figma or Sketch

Designers building a brand mockup need filler that reads like English but does not pull the reviewer into a copy critique. Plain lorem works for neutral wireframes. For brand-themed mockups (a bakery, a craft shop, a pirate game), pick the matching library so the visual mood survives the placeholder.

CMS template testing

Developers ship a new article template, blog template, or landing page template and need to populate the slots before content arrives. Generate 5 medium paragraphs in lorem, paste into the CMS, and stress test heading hierarchy, line breaks, and image-text wrap. Swap to long paragraphs to test scroll and pagination.

Font and typography preview

Type designers need preview copy that shows ascenders, descenders, capitals, and punctuation in a realistic mix. Real product copy biases the preview. Use medium lorem paragraphs to see how a font handles rhythm at scale, or use a themed library if the preview is going into a brand pitch deck.

Character-limit and word-count testing

QA engineers need text at known length to test form validation, summary truncation, and snippet rendering. Short paragraphs hit minimum-length checks, long paragraphs hit truncation and overflow. Pair this with our character counter to confirm the limit each paragraph hits, or the essay word counter when the spec is in word-target ranges (500-word, 1000-word).

Email and newsletter layout drafts

Email designers building a newsletter layout in HTML or a builder tool need placeholder copy that previews how text wraps across narrow mobile widths and wider desktop widths. Generate 3 medium paragraphs, paste into the email template, and test rendering before the editorial copy is written.

Populating demo data and sample posts

Demo accounts, sample posts, and seed data need text that fills slots without telling a confusing story. Pirate ipsum or cupcake ipsum is handy here because the obvious-fake content signals "demo" to any user who lands on it during testing, instead of looking like real but wrong content.

Lorem ipsum vs alternatives

All six libraries serve the same job (placeholder text), but they set different tones. Pick the one that fits your mockup's mood.

LibraryUse forSample
Lorem ipsum Classical default, safe everywhere Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet, consectetur adipiscing elit. Sed do eiusmod tempor incididunt ut labore.
Cupcake ipsum Sweet brands, bakeries, kids' apps Cupcake ipsum dolor sit amet caramels chocolate cake sweet roll. Brownie jelly beans gingerbread tart.
Hipster ipsum Design portfolios, artisanal brands Artisan cold-pressed flannel vinyl mustache, kale chips brunch authentic seitan thundercats.
Bacon ipsum Offbeat brands, restaurants, fun decks Bacon ipsum dolor amet pastrami brisket meatball, jowl tri-tip pork chop short ribs prosciutto.
Corporate ipsum B2B pitch decks, SaaS templates Synergize cross-functional deliverables to streamline stakeholder value across the enterprise stack.
Pirate ipsum Games, events, themed campaigns Avast ye scurvy lubber, the bilge rat plundered the doubloons before the kraken hove into view.

Why lipsum.com still dominates

Honest note. Lipsum.com (DR 83, roughly 130K monthly traffic) owns the classic lorem ipsum brand and has done since the early web. If all you need is plain lorem text, lipsum is the canonical destination and we link to it directly above.

Our differentiator is the multi-library dropdown plus paragraph-level controls in a single widget. If you want cupcake, hipster, bacon, corporate, or pirate variants without bouncing across half a dozen single-library sites, this is the page. If you want pure classical lorem with the original Cicero etymology page, use lipsum.

Frequently asked questions

What is dummy text and why use it?

Dummy text is placeholder copy used to fill a layout before the real text is ready. Designers, developers, and writers use it to preview a page, font, or template without the distraction of real content. Lorem ipsum is the classic example, but themed libraries (cupcake, bacon, pirate) work the same way and add character when you want the mockup to feel like a real page, not a wireframe.

How is this different from lipsum.com?

Lipsum.com is the canonical home of lorem ipsum and a great choice if all you need is classic placeholder text. This tool adds five alternative libraries (cupcake for sweet brands, hipster for portfolios, bacon for offbeat brands, corporate for B2B, pirate for games and events) and gives you paragraph-level controls in the same widget. Use lipsum for the original, use this when you want a themed variant or finer control.

Can I start with the classic Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet line?

Yes. With the Lorem ipsum library selected, tick the "Start with classic opening" toggle and the first paragraph will begin with "Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet, consectetur adipiscing elit." The remaining text is randomized so each run is fresh. The toggle is disabled for the other libraries because the classic opening only fits Latin lorem text.

Is dummy text safe to publish?

Dummy text should never ship to a live page. Search engines treat lorem ipsum and themed placeholder libraries as noise, and reviewers will spot it instantly. Use it for design, layout, and test environments. Swap it for real copy before any release that goes to a customer or to Google.

How many words per paragraph at each length?

Short paragraphs target about 30 words (one or two sentences, useful for cards and tight slots). Medium paragraphs target about 70 words (a typical body paragraph). Long paragraphs target about 150 words (a substantial block useful for testing scroll, justification, and line-wrap behavior). Actual counts vary by a few words because we keep sentences grammatical instead of cutting mid-thought.

Can I generate placeholder text on a plane with no Wi-Fi?

Yes. Load the page once on the ground and the six word libraries plus the template engine cache in your browser. At 30,000 feet you can still hit Generate, switch libraries, change paragraph length, and paste filler straight into your design tool. No round-trip to a server is needed once the page is open.

Why pick a themed library instead of plain lorem ipsum?

Themed libraries set a tone the wireframe can carry. A cupcake brand mockup feels more honest with cupcake-themed filler than with Latin. A pirate-themed game pitch lands better with pirate filler. The text is still placeholder so it is still safe to swap out, but the meeting in front of the mockup gets a small character boost instead of a generic Latin block.

How big are the word libraries?

Each library carries roughly 80 to 120 themed words plus a small set of connectors and templates. That is small by design (the page stays light), but combinatorially it produces millions of unique paragraphs. If you regenerate twice in a row you should not see a repeat run.
